I wish I could apologize for all the parents in my age group who believed dobson’s harmful ways….but I’ve always only been able to apologize to my kids for my own wrongdoings and mistakes.
That said, I hate what happened as a result of his nasty energy…I’m glad I wasn’t a follower. I knew it was somewhat expected in the church to be one, but the dismissiveness of a child’s humanity always hit me wrong.
No parent should EVER choose being “right” over choosing to love and support their child….we have ONE JOB, people, one job! To live and guide our children into becoming their best self—not our idea of their best self.
Some of the Evangelicals cause an immense amount of harm through bigotry and ignorance. It's hard to know where to begin with them. I'm a Christian and an ordained minister. I won't watch or otherwise support this sort of preaching. They do love to bash the LGBT community. How about preaching against greed, hatred and violence?
I remember back in the day being given one of his books on raising children. I got part way through and tossed it on the table. What a load of crock. My mom hit me with a belt! (Not very often, thank goodness!) I already determined I would never hit my children and I didn’t. Mind you I sometimes held up my slipper and threatened my girls, identical twins, while they giggled away. They knew I would y and thought it was a “get to bed” game.
I have a former son-in-law who was homeschooled using Bill Gothard garbage. Another wolf in sheep’s clothing.

I’m glad you’re healing.
I lived in Colorado, in Colorado Springs specifically. Dobson was a big deal, and I listened to him sometimes when driving home from CU Boulder.
I was lucky that Boulder was a stronger influence.
My dad, a career soldier, focused on three things.
Be honest with yourself and with others.
Strive to keep my promises.
And don’t do as he did but try to be better.
Strong foundation and armor against the Dobson’s of the world.
